PROFESSIONAL EXTERNAL RENDERING FOR YOUR HOME

External rendering can completely transform the appearance of a property while providing an important protective layer to the walls underneath.

At Probuild Contracts, we provide professional house rendering throughout Edinburgh and Central Scotland, working with everything from traditional properties requiring sympathetic repairs to homes looking for a cleaner, more contemporary exterior.

Good rendering is about much more than applying a new finish over an existing wall. The condition of the surface must first be inspected and properly prepared. Loose, cracked or defective materials may need to be removed and underlying problems addressed before a suitable rendering system is applied.

This preparation is particularly important in Scotland, where exterior walls are regularly exposed to driving rain, wind, frost and changing temperatures.

Our experienced team can assess your property and recommend a rendering system suited to the construction of the building, its existing condition and the appearance you would like to achieve.

RENDERING, ROUGHCASTING OR HARLING – WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?

It is easy to become confused by the terminology used for exterior wall finishes. Rendering, roughcasting and harling are closely related, but the finished appearance and method of application can be very different.

Rendering is the broad term used for applying a protective coating to an exterior wall. Modern renders can provide a smooth or finely textured appearance and are available in numerous colours and finishes. Silicone render, K Rend, acrylic render and traditional lime render all sit within this category.

Roughcasting generally describes a much more textured exterior finish containing or incorporating aggregate such as small stones or decorative chips. It has been widely used throughout Scotland because of its robust appearance and suitability for exposed exterior walls.

Harling is the traditional Scottish term commonly associated with wet-dash roughcasting. Aggregate is mixed into the finishing material before it is cast onto the wall, producing the familiar rough textured appearance seen on many Scottish homes and traditional buildings.
Pebble dash or dry dash is slightly different again. Rather than being mixed into the finishing coat, decorative aggregate is cast onto the freshly applied surface.

There is no single finish that is best for every property. The right option will depend on the existing wall construction, condition of the property, location and the appearance you want to achieve.
Our team can inspect your walls and explain the most suitable options before any work begins.

Types of Rendering We Offer

At Probuild Contracts, we offer a wide choice of external rendering systems and finishes for homes and commercial properties.

Smooth Render

A clean, uniform exterior finish that can dramatically modernise an older property. Smooth rendering can also be painted in a wide choice of colours.

Silicone Render

Modern silicone-based rendering systems provide a highly water-repellent yet breathable exterior finish. They are available in numerous colours and typically produce a clean, finely textured appearance.

K Rend

K Rend is a popular coloured rendering system used on properties throughout Scotland. It provides a modern appearance without the need to continually repaint traditional exterior render.

Acrylic Render

Acrylic-based finishes provide flexibility together with a wide range of colours and textures and can be suitable for a variety of modern rendering projects.

Textured Render

Not every customer wants a completely smooth exterior. Fine and heavier textured finishes can provide additional character while retaining the appearance of a modern rendered property.

Roughcast

For customers who prefer a more traditional, heavily textured exterior, we also offer roughcasting solutions.

Roughcasting Services

Wet Dash / Harling
Harling is a traditional Scottish exterior finish where aggregate forms part of the finishing mix before being cast onto the wall.

Harling Services

Decorative Chip / Dry Dash
Decorative aggregate can be applied onto a prepared render coat to create a hard-wearing textured finish in a choice of stone colours and sizes

Lime Render

Traditional lime-based render may be appropriate for older stone and heritage properties where breathability and compatibility with the existing masonry are particularly important.

Reliable roofer in edinburgh

Probuild has been responsible for the maintenance and renewal of the roof for more than fifteen years, during which time it has required annual checks, with specific restoration work to slating, guttering, flashing and pointing on an occasional basis.  Probuild's service has been exemplary in its professionalism, attention to detail, reliability and responsiveness.  In almost thirty years occupation of the house, we have been lucky to find Probuild and would not consider using any other roofer in Edinburgh for the work required on our roof.

Used Probuild for a repair to my guttering. They came out to give an estimate within a few days, were polite and professional and very reasonable. The work was carried out a few weeks later when I was at work. The repair looks great and blends in with the original guttering. A few days later I received the invoice. No hesitation in recommending this company.

Very professional and quick. Very easy to communicate with them and arrange quotes and invoices. The person that fixed our roof was polite, respectful of our house and friendly with our dog. He also made no mess and left everything clean and tidy. Very happy to recommend them.

Quickly responded to our enquiry and provided a comprehensive inspection with photos and a very competitive quote. Work commenced quickly and the job was completed on time. The job was reasonably large - chimney stack repair and render, gable end wall repair and render, rear wall strip, repair and render. All six residents (block of flats) happy with the work and the 10 Yr guarantee supplied.

WHY CHOOSE PROBUILD FOR EXTERIOR RENDERING?

A rendering system will only perform as well as the preparation underneath it.

Our team assesses the condition of the walls before recommending the most appropriate solution. Depending on the property, preparation can include removing defective render, repairing cracks and damaged masonry, preparing the substrate and installing appropriate beads, reinforcement or base coats.

With roofing, masonry, guttering and exterior building trades available through Probuild Contracts, we can also identify related defects that may be contributing to damage rather than simply covering them with new render.

All work is completed by an experienced team and supported by Probuild's written guarantee and established aftercare service.
